What is Double Ninth Festival? I will tell you, ok, let's begin! (Jiǎndān lái shuō, chóngyáng jié jiùshì jìnglǎo de jiérì.) "Simply speaking, Double Ninth Festival is a day to respect the elderly." (Wǒmen wèishéme huì zài chóngyáng jié shǎng jú ne?) "Why do we do chrysanthemum viewing on Double Ninth Festival?" Because, I think, the chrysanthemum will bloom during this season, so we will do that. 祭祖 (jì zǔ) "ancestor worship" When I was a child, I always ask my mom why we do that. But now I know, because (Jì zǔ de yìyì jiùshì bùyào wàngjì zǔxiān.) "The meaning of ancestor worship is not to forget the ancestor." (Qǐng bǎoyòu wǒmen quánjiā, wǒ gěi nǐ shàngxiāng le.) (Wǒ xiǎng wǒmen měitiān dū yīnggāi qù jìnglǎo, ér bùshì guāng zài chóngyáng jié zhè yītiān.) "I think we should respect the elderly everyday, not only on Double Ninth Festival." Why did we set this day as the day to respect the elderly? Because this day is on the ninth day of the ninth month, so in Chinese, nine means 九(jiǔ), and it is also same pronunciation with 久 (jiǔ); this 九 (jiǔ) means "number nine," and this 久 (jiǔ) means “keep longer; prolong”. So we use this nine to respect that you can live longer. (Dēngshān shì chóngyáng jié de chuántǒng xísú.) "Mountain climbing is a traditional activity on Double Ninth Festival." Why do we do that? At first we climbed the mountain to avoid some disaster, so we climb the mountain. Climb to the top! That's all for today! Today we learned several words related to the double ninth festival in China. Okay, guys, do you have some festival to respect the elderly in your country?
